Mel Gibson's Bio:
Few celebrities can match the star power of Mel Gibson. Arguably one of the hardest working men in the industry, Gibson started his career on the stage and quickly found his light on the big screen. In 1982, legendary NY Times chief film critic Vincent Canby wrote that "Mr. Gibson recalls the young Steve McQueen... I can't define "star quality," but whatever it is, Mr. Gibson has it." Although he was already a notable celebrity (courtesy of his lead role in "Mad Max" and "Mad Max II: The Road Warrior"), his star would increase significantly over the next few years. Gibson was still living in Australia at the time, and had received a number of awards from the Australian Film Institute, but would soon make his way to America. Although he took a year off from acting after the birth of his twin sons, Gibson returned for "The Bounty" in 1984 and again in "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" in 1985, earning Gibson his first million-dollar salary.
Gibson's pivotal role that would cement his status as a Hollywood "leading man" came in 1987's "Lethal Weapon," starring as Martin Riggs alongside Danny Glover. The "Lethal Weapon" franchise would go on to release three sequels over the years, ending with "Lethal Weapon 4" in 1998. Between "Lethal Weapon" movies, Gibson starred in a number of blockbuster films including "Tequila Sunrise," "Forever Young," "Maverick" and the smash hit "Braveheart," which Gibson also directed (and earned an Academy Award for Best Director). He spent the second half of the 1990's in such successful films as "Ransom," "Conspiracy Theory" and "Payback."
2000 was a banner year for Gibson, acting in three films that each grossed over $100 million. "The Patriot" saw Gibson in the role of Benjamin Martin, a widower caring for his seven children and trying to avoid participating in the Revolutionary War. "Chicken Run," the hilarious stop-motion animated film from the Oscar-winning studios that created "Wallace and Gromit," had Gibson providing the voice for Rocky, the circus-fleeing rooster. And as Nick Marshall in "What Women Want," Gibson played an advertising executive who, thanks to an unfortunate accident when he gets a new boss, gains the ability to hear what women are thinking. 2002 brought us Gibson in the Vietnam War drama "We Were Soldiers" and M. Night Shyamalan's "Sings," which became the highest-grossing film of Gibson's acting career. While promoting "Signs," Gibson announced his intention to take a break from acting.
Gibson had formed Icon Productions with partner Bruce Davey back in 1989, giving him a vehicle to release his own films and others that he believed in. In September 2002, after the success of "Signs," Gibson decided to return to directing, and announced the planned production of "The Passion of the Christ," which he co-wrote, co-produced and directed. "Passion" was released in 2004 with subtitles as the entire dialogue was in Aramaic and Latin, and although the film was controversial, it went on to become the highest grossing R-rated will of all time with $370,782,930 in US box office sales and nearly $612 million worldwide. In 2006 he directed the action-adventure film "Apocalypto."
Gibson continues to work on screenplays and distribute films through his Icon label, though his acting appearances have been limited. 2011 found Gibson acting in the Jodi Foster-directed film "The Beaver," a so-called dramedy that premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. He has expressed his desire to do a number of historical films, and in 1998 he purchased the movie rights for the novel "The Professor and the Madman," which tells the story of the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. …
