Conan O'Brien's Bio:
Conan O'Brien was born on April 18, 1963 in Brookline, MA and raised in an Irish Catholic family. He attended Harvard University, and served as president of the Harvard Lampoon undergrad humor publication. After graduating from Harvard, Conan moved to Los Angeles to be a writer for the HBO show "Not Necessarily the News," as well as writing for "The Wilton North Report" on FOX. During his two years at HBO, he regularly performed with various improv groups, including the ever-popular Groundlings. In 1988, SNL's executive producer Lorne Michaels hired Conan as a writer for the live weekend sketch comedy show. Conan spent three years writing for SNL, including such notable recurring sketches as "Mr. Short-Term Memory" and "The Girl Watchers." It was during his stay at SNL that Conan won his first of many Emmy Awards, along with his fellow writers, for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series.
Beginning in 1991 and until 1993, Conan was a writer and producer for the hit Fox show, "The Simpsons," and was credited as being writer or co-writer on four episodes, his favorite being "Marge vs. the Monorail."
September 13, 1993 marked a significant turning point in Conan's career as "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" premiered on NBC, the successor to "Late Night with David Letterman." Although the first three years of the show's run were touch and go, O'Brien and the "Late Night" writing team were nominated for an Emmy in 1996, a trend which continued every year since, although the only time the show won came in 1997. In 2004, eager to retain their rising star, NBC negotiated a new contract with O'Brien, including in the new contract that O'Brien would take over hosting "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno upon his expected retirement in 2009. The final episode of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" aired on February 20, 2009, with O'Brien ending the episode by destroying the set with an axe and handing out pieces of the set to the audience.
In 2007, while Conan was still host of "Late Night" and Jay Leno still holding the reigns at "The Tonight Show," Leno began to regret his decision to retire. Because Conan's contract already stipulated that he would take over "The Tonight Show" in 2009, NBC president Jeff Zucker offered Leno a different time slot, in an effort to keep him from moving to a rival network. Leno's final episode of "The Tonight Show" aired on May 29, 2009, and Conan O'Brien debuted the following Monday, June 1, 2009. In September of 2009, Jay Leno debuted his new show in the 10:00pm time slot.
Due to less than stellar early ratings for both Conan and Leno, NBC attempted to shift their programming and move Leno's show to the time slot held by "The Tonight Show" for more than 60 years, pushing Conan back to 12:05, which set off a very public battle between NBC, Conan, Leno and dedicated fans of each. Conan released a statement: "I sincerely believe that delaying The Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t The Tonight Show." On January 21, 2010, it was announced that Conan had reached a deal with NBC that would end his tenure effective the following day, giving hosting duties of "The Tonight Show" back to Jay Leno, and allowing Conan to move to another network as soon as September 2010. On march 11, 2010, Conan announced on his Twitter page that he planned to embark on a 30-city live tour, starting on April 12, and due to being restricted from appearing on television through his NBC settlement, he called the tour "The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour." Just hours before the first show in Eugene, Oregon, Conan announced that he would begin hosting a new show on TBS. The new show, called simple "Conan," debuted on November 8, 2010 at 11:00pm, netting him a People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Talk Show Host in 2011, along with four Emmy nominations. …
