Chanticleer's Bio: Founded in 1978 and based in San Francisco, California, Chanticleer was founded with the goal of performing vocal music of the medieval and Renaissance periods, a repertoire that founder Louis Botto believed was being neglected. Wanting to keep the performanc es true to their original style, when the tradition in most Renaissance churches was to only have male singers, Botto turned to members of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and the Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, two groups with which he already sang, a nd asked if they might join him in forming a new group. When it came to selecting a name for the group, founding member Charlie Erikson, who was in the midst of reading Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, suggested Chanticleer, the name of the "clear singing&quo t; rooster in The Nun's Priest's Tales.

Now more than thirty years later, with more than thirty albums behind them, and with a resume of successful worldwide tours, Chanticleer has developed a huge following and a major reputation not just for its Renaissance performances, but also for its expansive repertoire of jazz and gospel music, along with more than 90 original pieces commissioned from more than 70 composers. … Read more
