Malcolm X's birthday brought also the birth of The Last Poets in Marcus Garvey Park.
The Last Poets introduced what they dubbed "jazzoetry," blending jazz and funk instrumentation with poetry. They brought together music and the word.
The Poets wanted to be the voice of Malcolm X's ideas and concept of self-determination and black nationalism.
The in-your-face music addressed the language and reflected the harsh spirit of the times, revolving around themes including black power, Afrocentricity, realities of street life, racism, poverty, and prejudice.
Lyrics often dealth with social issues, criticizing the government and voicing support for the Black Panthers (an African-American revolutionary leftists organization).
The group has let out more than a dozen albums and several books. In 1970 they hit the US Top Ten album chart with their debut album. The Poet's first albums are now sought-after collectibles.
The next follow up album, "This is Madness," actually landed The Last Poets under the counter-intelligence program COINTELPRO list during the Nixon administration.
