Martin Lawrence's Bio: Born in Germany, Martin was named after civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. His father served in the US Military (hence the German birthplace), but after his parents divorced, Martin moved with his mother to Maryland. In his youth he was always known for honing his comedic skills while also competing as a boxer, becoming a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves contender. He later moved to Denver and began finding his way to comedy clubs, eventually landing a spot on "Star Search." Although he did not win, executives at Columbia TriStar Television saw his performance and offered Martin his first TV role as "Maurice" on the sitcom "What's Happening Now!!"

Martin soon found his way to bigger roles, finding his breakthrough spot as Cee in the spike Lee film "Do the Right Thing." This led to further roles in the "House Party" series and alongside Eddie Murphy in "Boomerang." Russell Simmons selected Lawrence to host the new HBO series "Def Comedy Jam," allowing him to build up even more exposure and finally get his own sitcom, "Martin" on Fox. Running from 1992-1997, "Martin" was a huge success and upon its eventual end, Lawrence was able to secure a number of roles in comedy films, originally as a supporting actor.

Martin quickly found his ultimate success in starring roles including the popular "Bad Boys" franchise, "Black Knight," "National Security," and finally his own franchise, "Big Momma's House."
