Frankie Avalon's Bio:
Before Fabian, Bobby Rydell, and a host of post-Elvis age teen idols, there was Frankie Avalon. First a vocalist with hits such as Cupid, De De Dinah, and Venus, Avalon quickly moved to the big screen -- where he ultimately appeared in over 30 movies.
Unlin
ke many of the pretty boy singers of the late 1950s and early 1960s, Frankie Avalon had a real musical background to go with his looks. Born in South Philadelphia in 1939, he broke into show business as a child prodigy trumpet player. After winning talent co
ntests, playing on the Jackie Gleason Show, and recording for RCA Victor's subsidiary, X Records, Avalon found himself playing backup trumpet in a Philadelphia band.
Local impresario Bob Marcucci, looking for rock & roll singers to record some of his son
gs, liked Avalonâ's look and had him belt out a couple of tunes. Marcucci had found what he was searching for, and a management contract was inked immediately. Avalonâ's unprecedented run of hits started with his first number one in 1959, Ve
nus, and he placed no less than six additional records in the Top 40 in that year alone.
In the early 1960s Avalon teamed up with Annette Funicello and reinvented himself as a clean-cut, pretty-boy surfer in the wildly successful batch of Beach Party movies
, including Beach Blanket Bingo a series that was big enough to bring him and Funicello back for a 1980s update, Back to the Beach.
Avalon's other movies include The Alamo, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and Grease, in which his cameo singing Beauty School
Dropout is considered a highlight. He regularly guest stars in stage productions of Grease, reprising his role of Teen Angel, and in Tony n Tina's Wedding as a characterized version of himself. He performed Beauty School Dropout with the five remaining conte
nders for the role of Sandy on the NBC television reality show Grease: You're the One That I Want!
